MINNEAPOLIS - The Burnet Gallery is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition in the gallery of new drawings by Alyssa Baguss. In this current work, Baguss examines what she calls “digital wanderlust”. The strong compulsion to travel and explore combined with today’s propensity to experience the world (known and unknown) through the internet. She describes this new medium as “virtual navigation” by which we exchange “an actual experience for an abstraction of experience” and in turn “form new habits and behavior about the natural world”.
In “Leave of Absence”, Baguss documents this new way of “travel” through drawing. She “constructs an experience that begins in the home and spans billions of miles”. “Using serene imagery from distant seeing machines I delicately articulate foreign landscapes with everyday construction and household materials. Plumb line chalk renders powdery craters from above, carbon paper records moments on the surface and carefully rendered postcards capture memorable encounters along the way. Leave of Absence is a symptom of wanderlust and a documentation of my travels.”
